Glasses and lenses do go hand in hand, just like handbags and shoes. You can’t have a kick ass pair shoes and match it with not so great handbag- it is the law of fashion (so I like to call it). I am not all that knowledgeable on the lenses front, my understanding of them is probably pretty basic like most people. Such as, I know I can get scratch resistance, anti-glare and transitioning lenses but that is probably as far as my knowledge goes because I do find every time I go into an optician they don’t usually or infact EVER explain to you about the different lenses options. The only reason why I know about scratch resistance is because that is probably the most common one.

So here is the thing. At 100% Optical there is a company called Waterside who will be exhibiting and this may also interest MGAM consumer based readers because this company has developed something called the OptikamPad which basically runs on the iPad like an App… I suppose. This will help opticians to dispense the correct leness for you and it does all the measurements as well.

Like in the picture, the patients do have to wear funny head gear in order for the iPad to take all the correct measurements. Once all the important measurements are taken, this is where the fun starts for the customers. It can compare all the frames you have picked side by side (noting new there to be honest) BUT then it comes to picking lenses. The iPad can demonstrate what different lenses types may look like in different circumstances so you can compare them together. You can also see the effect of different coatings so you know if it is worth paying the extra for certain types of coatings because normally when you pay for the lenses you don’t get to see what difference they makes compared to ordinary ones. Sometimes the customers can be left feeling they have paid the extra for nothing.

This tool is great for demonstrating what the best lens options are for you so you are in control of every step of picking your glasses.  You can make sure you get something that you can truly value and make the most out of because lets face it, glasses and lenses are not cheap. Opticians if you are attending 100% Optical they are at stand L100 and consumers if you want to enjoy this clever technology make sure you mention this to your local optician!
