I am no expert in children glasses and certainly not babies glasses infact I didn’t even know babies glasses existed because surely all babies are born with perfect vision-right? WRONG!!! Unfortunately as much as we want the world to be perfect and want everything to end happily ever after but the reality is, it really doesn’t. Some children are born with sight problem and when I went to OptraFair one company had a really interesting story to tell.
I did a full interview with the directors of TotsSpecs via SpecsNetwork TV which will be available in the YouTube channel soon but for now I will give you a taster of what they are about and their story.
These children glasses are actually called Tomato Glasses design by Mr Sungjoon Kim from south Korea but TotsSpecs is the UK distributor. The story behind these glasses is quite a heart warming one and it just show parents will always do what ever they can for their children.
Mr Sungjoon Kim son needed glasses at a very young age and he couldn’t find anything that fitted him properly or could be adjusted fully so he thought it is time to create something for his son but it turns out it can fill that gap in the market too. As I was saying I am no expert in children’s eyewear but when ever I go to an opticians I hardly see any about so it does seem like we have forgotten about the kiddies.
So how did these Tomato glasses came to the UK? Quite simple, the director of TotsSpecs- Sarah Gillingham’s son had an eye condition where he had to wear glasses from as young as 2 weeks old! Of course no glasses were that small and all the ones that were available were mental so highly uncomfortable for a baby to wear. So Sarah decided to take this matter into her own hand and start finding an alternative for her son- TotsSpecs were born!
Tomatoes glasses are made with extremely flexible rubber from the rim, temples and down to the nose pad to ensure they feel like feather and comfortable for babies and children. All the adjustment needed on the frames to fit each child can be easily achieved and even I can say I can do it without any knowledge of fitting frames. They have been design with children in mind and definitely give young children the confidence to wear glasses and not feeling alienated.
