In the fashion world the layout of the shop is all about giving the shoppers an experience and hopefully with the way the products are merchandised will encourage us to spend more. Everything in a shop is placed in a certain way for a reason and the other day when I was shopping in Forever21 I thought it was refreshing to see glasses placed in a fashion environment and with all the other accessories because that is what they are – an accessory.
I know the glasses in Forever21 are of course not “proper glasses” but maybe the optical industry can take a leaf out of the fashion world’s book. I personally find the shop layout in most opticians the way things are merchandised is not very inviting for customers. It needs to inject a splash of excitement and break away from the traditional way of doing things. That also includes some of the chains so I think the industry as a whole is guilty of this!
Maybe opticians can turn buying glasses into a bit of a fashion experience. It is always a bit dull to see rows and rows of glasses, so how about break it up a bit and put some related products inbetween such as cute glasses cloths, glasses chains and dress it up so it is more like a boutique rather than just an optician.
Use interesting ways to display glasses because I do think it is all about the way the are merchandised. Forever21 only used a typical glasses rack to display their glasses but because of the environment they were in it felt more inviting and exciting. Use props to dress up the shop floor rather using lots and lots of posters and other marketing materials because it just looks more confusing to consumers and borderline tacky to be honest.
Next time you are shopping for clothes really try and understand why things are being placed in a certain way and how can certain rules in fashion merchandising be taken and put into an optical environment. On that note, have a fab weekend and see you back here on Monday 🙂
