Last week on my husbands birthday I went along to the ic! Berlin/ Transitions event and if you were stalking me on twitter then you would know I actually made my very own pair of ic! Berlin glasses. The way they are designed it is actually quite easy to construct but a very fiddly job which does test your patience.
All ic! Berlin metal frames begin looking like this…
To make them you only need these 9 pieces then it is just a matter of sanding the metal down to ensure it doesn’t chip the lenses then of course you need to take your time to put all the components together.
I really like the way they are designed because they do just slot together like a 3D puzzle, no screws or hinges needed which does save time and money. Everything from ic! Berlin is made in their HQ so yes everything is made in Germany and we all know how great German cars are so you know you are getting a quality product.
Even though it seems such an easy concept and I bet you are all thinking “yeah I can make my own glasses from now on”… well no. I can assure you putting a pair of glasses together is not easy and is a totally time consuming job so we really should leave this kind of thing to the professionals.
Here is me giving it a go and as you can see you don’t really need any machinery to do it. EVERYTHING can be done by hand and do you want to know how long it took me to make (ok, this also included eating German Currywurst & chips) It took me approx an hour to make which doesn’t seem long but my pair wasn’t perfect. In that time scale it just wasn’t enough time to sand the metal down properly to ensure no chipping of lenses so when I got home the lenses were chipped. Boooooo!
As a matter of fact I actually chipped another set of lens when I was making them (whoops! sorry Transitions lens- I am guilty!). One of the things I love about ic! Berlin glasses is how their temples are attached, you literally just slot it together and it stays put! The founder of ic! Berlin Ralph was so quick at slotting the temple on and off it was almost like a magic trick. Obviously he knows the system inside out but I want to learn and do it just as quick because that will make a cool party trick 😉 hehehe.
Apart from making my own ic! Berlin glasses I will also be receiving a pair and I cannot wait to wear them! They are metal frames and if you have followed me from day one then you know I don’t normally like metal frames! I hope they come before Christmas! A perfect present!
