During 100% optical 2014 a competition was launched with the Royal College of Art to find the next talent in eyewear design. The competition was a success. For 100% optical 2015 they have once again teamed up with the Royal College of Art and launched another design competition. 55 students entered and just two days ago industry experts including RCA tutors Flora McLean, Heather Holford, industry luminaries Marie Wilkinson (Cutler and Gross); designer Emma Montague; Walter Berwick (Algha Works); legendary designer Lawrence Jenkin and Jason Kirk (Kirk and Kirk) had the tough job of narrowing them down to just three finalists for each of the two categories, ready to wear and couture.
The finalists for the each category are below;
Ready to wear – Alice Howard-Graham, Honggang Lu and Elizabeth Lee
Couture – Hannah Evans, Sari Rathel and Xiao XuWu
The finalists work will go on show to thousands of eyewear industry professionals at 100% Optical in February 2015, and in addition, the winning design in each category will be made up as prototypes by Algha Works in London. It must be so nerve racking for the students, I certainly remember those feelings when I was a uni student.
I am looking forward to seeing the prototypes at the show and I wish them all the best of luck because it is an amazing opportunity for them if they wish to pursue a career in eyewear design and become the next top British Eyewear designer! In the meantime have a great weekend and see you back here on Monday!
