Going to an optical show is always a great way to see what trends are up and coming within the world of optics. Going to Opti is fabulous because it is the first show of the year so a lot of brands will be gearing up for that and doing some new launches for the coming year. It is basically the perfect show to spot some trends.

Admittedly, I was quite busy with doing the judging for Blogger Spectacle and meeting various brands from the Opti24. However, I did spot what I feel are two key trends from the show. The first trend is a lens trend and the other is a frame shape trend.

Nature Tones

This one is the lens trend. During the show I saw endless amounts of sunglasses with brown to green tone lenses. They are not your typical dark coloured lenses either, they are lightly tinted so the wearer can take this look from indoor to outdoor, or vice versa. The coloured lenses give the frames a real 70’s Charlie’s Angels vibe. Some brands add a gradual tint to this look too so you really could wear this look anywhere and anytime.

The Odds

This one is focused on frame shapes and it is not about being big and bold. This one breaks away from the normal shapes of round, rectangular and oval. With the odds we see more creative shapes being used. Even though for some brands the lens shapes may appear ordinary, it is about building a creative shape around them, being a bit odd but extraordinary.

This is my trend summary from Opti 2020. I am looking forward to looking at more trends in 100% Optical 2020 and Mido 2020. Also, stay tuned because I will put a trend post together which is based on the trend talk I did back in the Hong Kong Optical show in November 2019. If you were not there and you’d like to see what my presentation was about, then this upcoming blog post is for you. Stay tuned.
