If you work in the optical industry then you are probably all aware that a lot of optical shows will not be taking place until 2021. Big shows like Silmo (which takes place in Paris) and Vision Expo West (another big show in Vegas) have now both said no show until 2021. Due to the current pandemic, the uncertainty of how it will all pan out and with different countries seeing a spike in cases, it is probably best to wait until 2021.

As you can imagine, organising any trade show is a massive job, there are a lot of things to consider. There is no point in putting the effort only for a show to be cancelled at the last minute due to the ever changing landscape of the pandemic. However, some smaller shows are still happening such as BOLD, an Independent optical fair taking place in Niijkerk in the Netherlands from 13 – 14th September 2020. The show will be organised in accordance to the Dutch guidelines to ensure everyone will stay safe.

What does that mean for consumers? If you are in need of some news frames then yes, your local opticians may have another layer of difficulty in showing you the latest collection.

Some opticians depend on trade shows to view the latest stuff and buy in new stock. With so many shows not happening until 2021, that is not possible at the moment. However, do not fret because many eyewear brands have sales reps going around everywhere to visit opticians and to show them the latest styles. So, consumers, you will still get to see some new stuff, do not worry! There may just be a slight delay. Just like everything else due to COVID 19.

For someone like me who relies on optical shows to see new trends, it has been near enough impossible to do my job. Without the shows there is no-way I can see so many glasses in one place at one time. It is just not possible.

Will I be going to Bold? The answer is no. As much as I’d love to go (I am itching to go because it may be the only show happening in 2020), with the uncertainty of travelling and being a mum, I also need to consider my two children too.

The first show I am looking to attend will be Opti Stuttgart happening in January 2021. I have everything crossed that by then we can wave bye bye to the coronavirus that has caused such chaos. At the same time, I also hope we have all learned something from this pandemic. Whether that is self discovery, understanding what really matters in our lives or just simply to not take things for granted.

Update: As this post went live we also received news that DaTE will be taking place in Florence from 19th – 21st September 2020. DaTE is a smaller show focus on avant- grande eyewear.
