The return of Hong Kong International Optical Fair 2023
The Hong Kong International Optical Fair 2023 was held from November 8th to 10th. MyGlassesAndMe once again received an invitation to participate, and it is always such a privilege to be invited back. The last time I was at the show for the first time was 2019, and it may feel like ages ago but due to the pandemic and the stricter Covid rules in Hong Kong, this bustling city didn’t fully reopen until February 2023. To say I was bursting with anticipation to attend was an understatement!
The first in-person show was truly remarkable; it was bustling with activity, and I could sense the visitors’ enthusiasm as they were eager to discover new products and engage in business transactions. Furthermore, the Hong Kong Optical Fair 2023 provides an exciting addition called Click 2 Match, allowing all attendees to begin sourcing products even before the show commences. Moreover, once the event concludes, you can maintain communication with the suppliers or buyers you connected with during the exhibition, ensuring that business opportunities extend far beyond the three-day show.
Not just About the Eyewear
While my primary interest at any trade show is always eyewear, as it is something I am truly passionate about, the Hong Kong show provided me with the opportunity to explore new horizons. I delved into the realm of machinery used to make glasses and the cutting-edge eye testing equipment. It was an enthralling experience for me because it shed light on the immense scope of the eyewear industry. Often, we tend to overlook the behind-the-scenes equipment that makes it all possible for the end user.
This year, the Hong Kong Optical Fair has significantly broadened its selection of European brands, with a particular emphasis on Italian ones. Personally, I made a conscious effort to distance myself from European brands. I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to explore these brands at other European shows like Opti and Mido. As a result, my attention was solely geared towards Asian brands, as it is a rare occurrence to come across such a diverse range all in one place at a European event.
Eyes on Asian Brands
This year I was seeing more Korean and mainland Chinese brands which is great because I have never come across them in Europe. There were a few stand out brands for me too.
For Korean brands, they are as follows…
Front – I was already familiar with Front from the 2019 show, but they managed to impress me once more. Their designs were daring and distinct, standing out from the simplicity often found in Korean brands.
Lash- A Korean brand focusing on simple elegant lines and style. The design is timeless but with modern materials and techniques used.
Pla_sta- Introducing Pla_sta, the ultimate blend of metallic elegance and soft pastel hues. The brand reimagines the use of metal, offering a stunning selection of non-traditional colours. Within the brand dynamic circular designs steal the spotlight.
For mainland Chinese brands they are as follows…
Jungle Cameo- This brand exudes an urban aesthetic, offering a wide selection of stylish acetate frames that go beyond the ordinary. Even a classic black frame becomes anything but mundane. The unique shape adds a touch of captivating drama.
Serova- This brand provides a wide array of classic shapes but allowing you to venture into your untamed side as well with its collection abundant in bold statement pieces, oversized shapes, and a fusion of diverse materials and vibrant colours.
Deeki- Finally, we have Deeki, metal frames available in a variety of vibrant colours. The metal rim is slightly wider than norm creating a bold and striking appearance that adds an extra touch of excitement and awe.
A Special Shout Out
I have to give a special mention to the Japanese brand Mobile’n because I was truly impressed by them. All of their glasses are meticulously crafted by a single 83-year-old artisan. Can you believe that only about 100 frames are created in each batch by this incredibly skilled individual? Now that’s what I call exclusivity!
Classico also deserves some recognition as the only Taiwanese brand I discovered with truly unique designs. While they may not appeal to everyone’s taste, their style showcases a delightful blend of classic elegance and quirky charm.
Key Themes at The Show
In addition to checking out the eyewear, I had the opportunity to attend several informative talks at the exhibition. The Hong Kong Optical Fair 2023 placed great emphasis on three key themes: 3D Technology, environmental sustainability, and the promotion of eco-friendly practices within the optical industry. Furthermore, the event explored the exciting advancements in smart technology and its potential to revolutionise various aspects of the sector.
I managed to squeeze in a lot during the three-day show, but I always wish I had more time to thoroughly check everything out and attend more talks. It’s no surprise that this show has attracted over 12,000 buyers, as it truly offers everything you need for the optical sector, regardless of your role in the business.
Finally, I want to express my gratitude to HKTDC for inviting me to this incredible show. The organisation was exceptional from beginning to end, ensuring a stress-free experience and taking excellent care of us. Thank you for yet another unforgettable trip to this magnificent city I proudly call home.
