With winter upon us, it’s time to consider how the colder weather affects not just our wardrobes but our eyes too—especially for us specs and contact lenses wearer. Here’s MGAM guide and based on my own experience on how to keep our eyes healthy and comfortable during the chilly months.
Navigating the Cold: Eyecare Essentials
For the past couple of days UK is definitely getting some pretty cold weather and it got me thinking about my eye health because they feel dryer than normal and I am noticing myself using a lot more eyedrops than usual. So, here are some tips to help glasses or contact lens wearers to navigate through this cold season:
Combat Dry Indoor Air: The dry heat from central heating systems can suck the moisture right out of the air, leading to eye discomfort. (my eyes and skin are certainly feeling extra dry) Consider using a humidifier to add some moisture back into your home environment to help keep your eyes and skin from feeling dry.
Lens Anti Fog: Transitioning from the cold outside to the warmth indoors can lead to the pesky problem of lens fogging (one of my pet hate!). Using anti-fog wipes or sprays on your glasses can help maintain clear vision.I recommend Bright Wipe and Klarpilot Spray (picture below). I’ve tried them both myself and the spray works like a dream! I’ve done a Reel on this too and this isn’t an ad as I genuinely loved the product!

Sun Protection: The sun’s rays can be just as harmful in winter, especially when UV rays are reflected off icey surfaces. It’s important to wear sunglasses with UV protection when outdoors to safeguard your eyes against potential UV damage, which can lead to conditions like snow blindness.
Stay Hydrated: Keeping hydrated isn’t just summer advice. Drinking plenty of fluids can help maintain your body’s natural moisture levels, including those in your eyes.
Consider Glasses Over Contacts: On those windy, wintry days, opting for glasses instead of contact lenses can shield your eyes more effectively from the elements and help retain moisture as we all know contact lens can dry our eyes out.
Switch to Contacts Later: If you wear contacts, consider putting them in after you’ve arrived at your destination rather than wearing them from the moment you leave the house. This can reduce eye dryness and irritation caused by early morning tiredness and dry wintery air.
Eyedrops: whether you are wearing glasses or contact lens, I find in the winter months it is important to always carry a bottle of eyedrops. They are a life saver when your eyes are feeling uncomfortable.
Seasonal Eye Comfort
Winter doesn’t have to be a struggle for those who wear glasses or contact lens. With the right planning and care, you can protect your vision and stay comfortable, regardless of the weather.
