Heading off on holiday this summer? If you are new to wearing glasses or contact lenses, MGAM is here to give you a little helping hand because extra planning is required and can make all the difference between a relaxing vacation to a vision-related disaster. I am speaking from experience here, with 20 plus years of experience as a glasses wearer. Here’s MGAM go-to checklist of essentials, plus why each one matters—so you can focus on making memories and not fixing your specs!
For Glasses Wearers
1. Spare Pair of Glasses
Accidents happen—frames get sat on, lenses get scratched, or glasses just vanish in the sand. Always pack a backup pair, even if it’s your old prescription. Same for sunglasses, always pack a spare pair.
2. Glasses Cleaner & Microfibre Cloth
Salt, sunscreen, and sweat can leave your lenses in one smeary mess and it is incredibly annoying. Pack a travel-sized cleaner and cloth to keep your vision clear. We highly recommend microfibre cloth, they are the best at getting rid of dirt and grease but if that is not possible, a normal glasses cloth will do the trick too but may require more squirt from the glasses cleaner.
3. Hard Case
A sturdy case to protect your glasses from knocks in your bag or suitcase. It’s a holiday must-have!
4. Mini Repair Kit
Tiny screws have a way of working loose at the worst times. A mini screwdriver, spare screws, and nose pads can save the day. You can buy a mini glasses fixing kit either online or even at shops such as Home Bargains.
5. Prescription Sunglasses
Don’t squint your way through sightseeing—bring sunglasses with your prescription for comfort and UV protection.
6. Anti-Fog Spray or Wipes
If you’re heading somewhere humid or really hot where you will be going in and out of air condition, anti-fog products is a must to keep your lenses clear.
For Contact Lens Wearer
1. Enough Lenses for Your Trip (Plus Spares!)
For dailies wearer, bring more than you think you’ll need—delays and lost luggage happen. I always take an extra 7 days worth and I always keep one pair with me in my hand bags at all times.
2. Solution & Case
If you are a monthly wearer which I used to be, pack travel-sized bottles of solution and a clean case. If you’re flying, check liquid restrictions and pop them in your hand luggage. Also, pack sanitising hand gel just incase you cannot wash your hand for whatever reason, as you should not touch your lenses with dirty hands. Keep the hand gel to emergency only because washing your hands is the best method.
3. Daily Disposables (If Possible)
Dailies are a game-changer for travel—no cleaning, less fuss, and less risk of infection.
4. Eye Drops
Travel (especially flying) can dry your eyes. Lubricating eye drops keep your eyes comfortable and lenses wearable. Again, I always keep it with me in my handbag at all times.
5. Glasses as Backup
Even if you’re a die-hard lens wearer, always bring your glasses. Eyes can get irritated or tired, and you’ll be glad for the option. Also, you shouldn’t wear contact lenses if you are swimming because bacteria can grow on them which can lead to infections, always wear goggles to protect your eyes too.
Why These Essentials Matter
Comfort & Convenience: The right kit means less stress and more fun.
Eye Health: Clean lenses and hands are crucial, especially in unfamiliar environments.
Preparedness: Being ready for the unexpected (lost luggage, broken specs, irritated eyes) keeps your holiday on track.
Final Tip:
Pop all your eyewear essentials in your carry-on, not your checked luggage. That way, you’re covered even if your suitcase takes a detour! Happy travels—and don’t forget to tag @myglassesandme in your holiday snaps!
