Italian Fashion Hits Japan: Days of Italian Fashion in the World
Italian fashion is about to make waves in Japan! Whether you are an eyewear lover, work in the optical sector or eyewear designer – you should check this out if you can. On Sunday, August 3rd, the “Days of Italian Fashion in the World” kicks off at Expo Osaka, shining a spotlight on everything we love about Italian style—especially when it comes to eyewear. This exciting project is backed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, with support from ITA (the Italian Trade Agency) and a host of fashion industry leaders, including ANFAO (the Italian Optical Goods Manufacturers’ Association).
A Fashion Tour Across the Globe
After Osaka, the tour will jet off to Dubai, then Brazil, and finally India, sharing the story of Italian fashion with the world. The whole project is built around three big ideas: creativity, sustainability, and global influence.
Spotlight on Eyewear: What to Expect
So, what’s in store for eyewear fans? The “Italy is Fashion” exhibit, curated by Clara Tosi Pamphili, is all about showing off the best of modern Italian fashion—including, of course, some seriously stylish specs. ANFAO will be representing Italian eyewear with a stunning display that’s set to wow visitors. Expect to see a gorgeous mix of vintage and contemporary designs, all celebrating the unique blend of innovation and craftsmanship that sets Italian eyewear apart.
A Journey Through Time: Vintage to Modern
The exhibit starts with six vintage frames from the Eyewear Museum in Pieve di Cadore, each one telling the story of a different decade from 1900 to the 1990s. From there, you’ll dive into the materials that make Italian eyewear special—think feather-light titanium, versatile cellulose acetate, and high-tech Grilamid TR90 (perfect for sports eyewear and known for its flexibility and memory).
Behind the Scenes: The Artistry of Eyewear Making
But it’s not just about finished frames. You’ll also get a peek behind the scenes, with displays of semi-finished parts, colourful acetate blocks, and hand-blended pigments that show off the artistry and precision of Italian makers.
Design Excellence: From Sketch to Spectacle
Design lovers are in for a treat, too. The exhibit features original sketches from legendary designer Sergio Cereda, plus a line-up of bold, modern designs—from chunky acetate styles and sporty wraps to sculpted, three-dimensional frames and sleek titanium pieces that highlight both engineering and sustainability.
Eyewear Heritage: The Story Behind the Frames
Rounding out the story are archive photos of artisans at work in Cadore (the heart of Italian eyewear), early snapshots from the iconic MIDO | Milano Eyewear Show, and vintage ad campaigns that trace the evolution of Italian style from the 1950s to the 1980s.
One for the Bucket List
If you’re as obsessed with eyewear as we are, this is definitely one for the bucket list! We’ll be keeping an eye on the tour as it travels the globe, so stay tuned for more updates on all things Italian eyewear.
