It’s that time of year again as we are counting down to “back to school” and for some children, it means backpacks, new timetables, and more screen time because it may be needed to complete some homework.
Whether you’re heading back to school or off to college/ university , chances are you’ll be spending more time again staring at screens – laptops, tablets and smartphones because some of you may have had a bit of a tech detox over the summer period. All that digital work can leave your eyes feeling tired, dry, or just plain sore. But don’t worry, MGAM has your back with some easy, glasses-friendly tips to help your eyes stay happy and healthy all term!
1. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule
Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This simple trick helps your eyes relax and reduces strain from constant close-up work. It is a good work out for our eye muscle!
2. Blink More (Seriously!)
We blink less when we’re staring at screens, which can lead to dry, irritated eyes. Make a conscious effort to blink more often, or try using lubricating eye drops if your eyes feel dry. Dry eyes can make your eyes feel tired, just like when you are tired, your eyes will naturally feel drier.
3. Adjust Your Screen Setup
- Keep your screen about an arm’s length away (so important!)
- Position the top of the screen at (or just below) eye level.
- Reduce glare by working in soft, natural light and avoiding direct sunlight on your screen.
4. Take Regular Breaks
Don’t just take breaks from studying, take breaks from your screen! Get up, stretch, and give your eyes a real rest. I think it is even better if you can shut your eyes for a bit just to give them a rest.
5. Blue Light Glasses: Yay or Nay?
Blue light blocking lenses are popular, but the science is still mixed. If you find them helpful, go for it! If not, focus on the tips above and consider using your device’s built-in “night mode” or blue light filter in the evenings. If you ask me, there are too many misinformation out there about blue light. Yes, SOME blue light can be harmful but not all but we do need blue light and blue light are also everywhere… hello! the sun!
6. Keep Your Glasses (and Screens) Clean
Smudges and dust can make your eyes work harder. Clean your lenses and screens regularly for crisp, comfortable vision. I mean, it is just like wearing a pair of dirty smudgy glasses if you ask me.
7. Listen to Your Eyes
If you notice headaches, blurry vision, or persistent discomfort, don’t ignore it! Let your parents or a teacher know, and book an eye test with your local optician.
The Bottom Line
Your eyes are going to be working hard this term – give them a little love! Try these tips, and let us know which ones work for you. Got your own back-to-school eye care hacks? Drop them in the comments or tag us on Instagram @MyGlassesAndMe .
