Jetting off somewhere sunny? If you are, checkout our previous post on – Summer Holiday- Pilot special.  Whether you’re a glasses or sunglasses wearer, you may know what that “eek” feeling of scratched lenses, lost frames, or that dreaded “snap” moment when you least expect it. Holidays should be carefree—not filled with glasses drama! Here’s your essential guide to keeping your eyewear safe, wherever your travels take you.

Main Suitcase:

If you must pack your glasses in your checked in suitcase, use a hard-shell glassescase (not a soft pouch!) and wrap the case in layers of clothing for extra padding.

Why? Luggage gets thrown around (have you seen those social videos?). Even the sturdiest suitcase can crack if squashed between heavy items.

Tip: Place the glassescase in the centre of your suitcase, surrounded by clothes—not at the edges where impacts are more likely to happen.

Hand Luggage:

Always the safest bet! Keep glasses in a hard case and store them in an easy-to-reach pocket (not at the bottom, where they’ll get squished).

Why? You can keep an eye on your bag and avoid rough baggage handling.

Tip: If your checked luggage goes missing, you’ll still have a pair of glasses with you.

Handbag:

Perfect for quick access, but beware of loose items (keys, pens, makeup) that could scratch lenses.

Tip: Use a hard case and keep it in a dedicated pocket or pouch away from clutter.

Should You Hook Your Sunglasses to Your Top?

It may look cool and it is super convenient, but…

Fact: It’s one of the most common ways people lose or drop their sunglasses. They can easily slip off when you bend over or take off a jacket. This is also speaking from personal experience where I hooked my sunglasses onto my top, I was visiting the ladies, you can imagine the rest. Lucky they were only cheap sunglasses.

Best Practice: Only do this for quick stops. If you’re moving around a lot, pop them back in their case.

Should You Wear Sunglasses Like a Hairband?

It’s tempting and it looks cool, especially at the beach or by the pool. But:

Fact: Most opticians advise against it. This habit can stretch out the arms (temples) and loosen the screws of your sunnies, over time it will just loosen the frame. It also expose the lenses to hair products and oils, which can cause smudging or worse case – damage.

Best Practice: Use your case or a soft pouch if you need a quick break from wearing them.

More Holiday Eyewear Tips

Bring a Spare Pair: Always pack a backup pair of glasses or sunnies, just in case. Even if your glasses may be an older pair and not in your latest prescription.

Lens Cloth & Spray: Keep a microfibre cloth and travel-size cleaning spray handy—saltwater, sunscreen, and sand are all enemies of your eyewear.

Avoid Leaving in Hot Cars: Extreme heat can warp frames and damage lens coatings. Yes really! My husband is TERRIBLE for constantly leaving his sunglasses in the car.

Use a Glasses Chain: Especially handy for outdoor adventures – no more sunglasses overboard!

Take a Picture of Your Prescription: If disaster strikes, you’ll have all the info you need for a replacement.

Travel Insurance: Check if your eyewear is covered for loss or damage.
