Summer holiday is in full swing with both my children now fully embracing their summer break. There’s something about summer vacation that makes us want to look as relaxed and low maintenance as possible. The problem is, the very things we love about being away is sun, heat, late nights, salty food, aeroplane air-con and they can all leave the eye area looking puffy, tired, makeup sliding around, and eyes feeling dry or irritated.

The good news? You don’t need a suitcase full of products to take with you to keep your eyes looking bright. A few smart swaps (and a little eye comfort know-how) go a long way, especially if you wear glasses.

Start with the real summer “eye beauty” secret: comfort

If your eyes feel gritty, watery, or tired, it shows. Holidays can sometimes mean more screen time such as map reading, photos taking and just general scrolling. More wind and sun exposure, plus more air-con. Staying hydrated helps, but so does being prepared: if you’re prone to dryness, pack preservative-free lubricating drops and use them before the irritation really kicks in.

If you wear contact lenses on holiday, keep it simple and clean. Wash hands before handling lenses, do not “top up” solutions, and be cautious around pools and the sea. Comfort first and beauty follows. I also recommend maybe switching to daily for holidays because it is easier to manage the cleanliness of the lens and you don’t need to worry about forgetting to pack case and solution. This is speaking from experience.

Sun protection (yes, around the eyes)

The skin around your eyes is delicate so, a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ that works for your face is a non-negotiable in summer. I actually always go for SPF 50+ then you also need to remember to apply them and be gentle around the eye area and reapply if you’re out all day or swimming.

Do not underestimate sunglasses. They’re not just for style purposes: they reduce squinting, protect against UV, and help with wind-induced watery eyes. Your eyes look calmer and your makeup shall behave with no smudges in sight.

Puffiness: the quick fix that actually works

Holiday puffiness is usually a cocktail of heat, travel, salt, and dehydration. You don’t need anything fancy, just coolness and consistency. A clean, cool flannel pressed under the eyes for a minute can make a difference. If you like eye gels or patches, keep them chilled and use them while you’re doing your hair or scrolling through your dinner options.

A gentle massage from the inner corner outward can also help. Keep pressure light; think “drainage”, not “rubbing”.

Makeup that plays nicely with glasses (and humidity)

If your makeup tends to crease or smudge behind lenses, summer is the time to go lighter. Instead of heavy concealer everywhere, use a small amount only where you need it, usually the inner corner and any shadowing.

Set it with a dust of powder so it doesn’t move, but avoid over-powdering it can look dry and textured.

For mascara, the goal is lift and longevity without fallout. Curling lashes helps keep them off lenses. If you always smudge, try a tubing mascara for day-to-day, and save waterproof for beach days or humid evenings. Whatever you choose, remove it gently because rubbing is the fastest way to irritated eyes and break lashes. I can also recommend semi permanent eyelashes as I am a big fan of them. You glue them on and they last 7 or more days. They can survive humidity and water sports too.

Your tiny holiday eye kit and all under 100ml

This is the low-effort kit that saves you when you’re running late:

  • Mini SPF
  • Lubricating eye drops (if you’re prone to dryness)
  • Gentle makeup remover
  • Cooling eye gel/patches (optional)
  • Microfibre cloth for glasses
  • Small lens cleaning spray for your glasses and sunglasses

The 5-minute reset for tired holiday eyes

If you’ve had a late night and you’re heading out again then give this a try: cool compress, drops if needed, a touch of concealer, curl lashes, mascara, and then sunglasses. It’s not cheating, I want to call it a holiday strategy.
Summer holiday eye beauty isn’t about perfect makeup. It’s about keeping your eyes comfortable, your skin protected, and your routine light enough that you can actually enjoy being away. Pack smart, go easy on product layers, and let your frames and your sunglasses do some of the styling work.
